ISO/IEC 27001 for growing companies: the first five steps

A plain-language starting plan for organizations that have been asked about ISO 27001 and do not know where to begin.

ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for an information security management system (ISMS). Enterprise customers and regulators increasingly ask for it. The good news is that the first steps are mostly about decisions, not documents.

1. Define the scope

Decide which parts of the organization the ISMS covers: a product, a business unit or the whole company. A smaller, well-defined scope is faster to implement and easier to certify. You can expand it later.

2. Get leadership commitment

The standard requires top management to own information security objectives and provide resources. Name an accountable executive and agree a realistic budget and timeline before any policy is written.

3. Assess your risks

Risk assessment is the heart of ISO 27001. Identify the information assets in scope, the threats to them, and the likelihood and impact of each risk. Then decide how each risk will be treated: reduced, accepted, avoided or transferred.

4. Choose your controls

Annex A of ISO/IEC 27001:2022 lists 93 reference controls in four themes: organizational, people, physical and technological. Your Statement of Applicability records which controls apply, why, and whether they are implemented.

5. Run a gap analysis

Compare what you do today against the standard’s clauses and your chosen controls. The result is a prioritized plan, which is usually far shorter than teams expect, because many good practices already exist informally.

What certification involves

Certification is performed by an accredited certification body, typically in two stages: a documentation review and an implementation audit. Readiness advisers, including Cyveraqis, help you prepare but do not issue certificates.

Next step: our ISMS360 readiness service covers steps 1 to 5 and leaves you with a certification-readiness roadmap.
